St.Mary's School

Welcome to Area 2! (Years 4 to 6)

Area 2 teachers aim to provide our students with an enriched learning programme and with opportunities to practice responsible citizenship.

Sport and Trips

Periodically classes are involved in educational trips and visits. It is our policy to involve parents in these trips so they may share some of the pleasures associated with giving children the opportunity to learn outside the classroom. Our Outdoor Education Programme allows the students to become more aware of the effect they have on the environment. These prearranged outdoor experiences promote aspects of personal development such as self-esteem, resourcefulness, independence and cooperation.

Special Awards

Throughout the year we hold Award Assemblies. These awards are presented to students from Year 4 to 6. They show recognition of the effort the students have put in to their schoolwork throughout their learning.

Below are listed some expectations of a Middle Primary Student.
Uniforms
All children should wear the correct uniform everyday. If your child is unable to wear the correct uniform please send the teacher a note explaining the reason why he/she is wearing the incorrect uniform and when he/she will be in the correct uniform. A school PE shirt and the school shorts must be worn for PE and Daily Fitness everyday. Uniforms are to be worn with pride and kept clean and tidy every day. No jewellery is allowed. Girls are only permitted to wear stud earrings. Gel in hair is prohibited. Children are only allowed to wear religious symbols, necessary for the practice of a child's faith.

Please help your child in making this a daily routine. Please ensure that Homework is checked and signed by you. Your support will help your child in the classroom.

Behaviour

It is important that you and your child be informed of the standards of classroom behaviour so everyone knows what is expected. We have always found parents to be very supportive of good classroom behaviour so that their child has a good environment for maximum learning. We are attaching a copy of Area 2's classroom rules, consequences and positive recognition system so that you can reinforce this at home. There is also a reward and discipline system in Area 2 for children. The reward system will be a strong feature of our classroom programme.

Positive Reinforcement

  1. Verbal praise - personal and public.
  2. Merit certificates- Class based/ School assemblies.
  3. Stickers and comments written on work.
  4. Displays of work.
  5. Special privileges- eg. time on the computer, board games etc.

Discipline Plan

A 6 stage discipline plan is discussed at the start of each term and is as follows:
  1. First warning is your name on the board.
  2. Second warning is a tick against your name.
  3. There will be no third warning. You will be sent to the time – out corner for 5 minutes to think about your behaviour and write ways you could improve.
  4. If you are given another warning after time-out, you will be sent to the syndicate leader for a change of environment.
  5. You will be sent to Mr. Allen for swearing or fighting which could result in suspension.
  6. If you continue with inappropriate behaviour, a letter will be sent to your parents requesting an interview.
Please take the time to discuss these issues with your child so that he/she understands the implications of breaking school rules.
